ELLIE SYMEON
CountryHouse at Kythera
Perched within the rugged landscape of Kythera, this project reimagines a traditional stone-built country house as a contemporary rural sanctuary, balancing preservation with subtle transformation. The original structure—defined by its thick masonry walls, modest openings, and organic relationship with the terrain—is carefully restored using local techniques and materials, ensuring its historical integrity and tactile authenticity remain intact. The design emphasizes continuity between interior and landscape, opening carefully positioned views toward the surrounding hills. Light and outdoor living becomes a central design tool, filtering through new apertures and transitional spaces, contrasting the solidity of the original structure with moments of transparency and openness. The result is a family home that honors the island's heritage while embracing a restrained modernity—a place where time layers coexist, and where the simplicity of rural life is enriched by thoughtful architectural clarity.
